My Story

Me and my girls

Mom and her girls

I became a mother at 18. Young and afraid, but I was determined to make it work. This pregnancy was extremely complicated for me. I was in and out of the hospital. I ended up delivering her at 36 weeks, but soon after I would develop Eclampsia (high blood pressure that led to seizures) I almost lost my life.

I made sure that if I ever became pregnant again I would be educated and ready. I learned what I could in regards to pregnancy and how to be healthy. I went on to have two more pregnancies that were great! No problems whatsoever. Until baby number four, the entire pregnancy went well, but on delivery day, I ended up hemorrhaging. I almost lost my life....again.

I ended up having a nurse not listen to me about my concerns, thanks to shift change and a wonderful nurse she came in and immediately knew something was wrong. As I fought for my life, I saw my girls faces flash before my eyes. I remember praying for my life to be spared, and it was. After this, I couldn't help but think, what if I had a doula? What if I had someone there to advocate for me that day? Would the outcome have been different in a positive way?

That day was the day I decided to become a DOULA!
